  • oil on oak panel

Condition

The tone of the original is a touch lighter than it appears in the catalogue illustration. The support consists of a single panel with a very slight convex bow. The paint surface is secure and in good condition, particularly in the details of the flowers, under an old varnish. Some old discoloured retouchings are just visible to the naked eye in the darks of the background and these are confirmed under UV light. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Pure flower still lifes form a very small part of the oeuvre of Adriaenssen, who seems to have preferred painting fish and game: surviving flower pieces number about five.  This unrecorded painting is directly comparable with two others, both of flowers in glass vases identical to the one seen here (see G. Spiessens, Leven en Werk van de Antwerpse Schilder Alexander Adriaenssen (1587-1661), Brussels 1990, pp. 170-1, 196-7, no. 128 & no. T10, reprodueced figs. 78, 102.  The latter, which is unsigned, is listed under attributed works, but looks authentic in the reproduction).
