Description
- Joos de Momper
- A mountainous landscape with travellers on a path, a lake and harbour beyond
- oil on canvas
Provenance
In the family of the present owner since the 1950s.
Condition
The canvas has an old relining. The paint surface is secure, and in good condition under an old varnish. Some old discoloured retouching work is visible to the naked eye in the greens and blues of the far distance. This is confirmed under UV light which also reveals scattered minor work elsewhere and some more significant retouchings along the margins of the canvas, presumably the result of past frame abrasion.
Offered in a wooden frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note
This unpublished work is an excellent example of the panoramic landcapes for which Joos de Momper was justly renowned, earning him the sobriquet 'pictor montium' which was inscribed beneath his portrait in Anthony van Dyck's famous Iconography (circa 1632-44). A compositionally similar work of comparative size (108 by 180.5 cm.) was sold New York, Sotheby's, 20 January 1983, lot 88.
