Condition

The original paintings are much softer in tone than they appear in the catalogue illustration, particularly in the skin tones, which incorrectly appear bleached in the catalogue. The stable, flat support of the portrait of a man is composed of three vertical panels and is bevelled on all bar the right edge. The stable flat support of the portrait of a woman consists of four vertical panels and is bevelled on all bar the left edge. The left panel join has been reinforced by a series of small horizontal batons and is visible in the paint surface. Both paint surfaces are otherwise secure and in good condition under even varnishes. Some of the browner pigments are a bit thin, particular in the hair and background of the portrait of the man. Some old discoloured retouchings are visible in the background and to a lesser extent in the costume of the two portraits as well as along the aforementioned panel join. These are confirmed under UV light which reveals some other minor scatted work Offered in matching gilt wood and plaster frames in good condition.

Catalogue Note

The identification of the male sitter as Ijsenbrand Allerts is traditional. A family from Alkmaar, his portrait carries arms that indicate they were not ennobled, while that of his wife bears those of the Van Brederode family of Holland.
