Literature
E. Walsh and R. Jeffree, 'The Excellent Mrs Mary Beale', Tower Art Gallery exhibition calatogue, London 1975, p. 70, no. 92 (listed under a checklist of works by Mary Beale).
Condition
The painting is in good condition with no apparent extant damage or loss of paint, and the catalogue illustration is representative. There is a fine craquelure in the flesh tones, in keeping with the age of the picture, and the canvas has been lined. The surface is a little flat as a result and the paint slightly worn in the blue of the cloak, but otherwise it has not been abraded. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals infilling to craquelure in the sitter's forehead and two small areas of restoration in the background, one above the head and the other to the left of the head. There are scattered minor flecks of retouching overall. The picture is held in a carved and gilded wooden frame with some losses to the gilding.

A pair to the portrait of her husband, Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle (1630-1691) at Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire. Both portraits share the same painted cartouche, and both are inscribed in the same hand with the identity of the sitter, upper left. Another portrait of the sitter by Beale, three-quarter length in ermine robes, is at Welbeck Abbey.
