Catalogue Note

This unpublished portrait is a new addition to the oeuvre of the Cranach family, described by Dr. Werner Schade as a work "von bester Qualität, Lucas Cranach d. J. von 1571".  19th Century inscriptions on the reverse and on a label identify the sitter as Dorothea von Dehren, giving 1570 as the date of her marriage, a year before the portrait is dated.

This elegant portrait is characteristic of Lucas Cranach the Younger's mature style, with a light grey background and a concomitant predominance of white in the face and hands. The sitter is depicted in Cranach's favoured portrait format, three quarter length, turned to the left with the details of dress and headdress carefully described against a pale background.
