Catalogue Note

This can be compared quite closely with a number of the very large group of landscape drawings by Callot contained in an album at Chatsworth.  They are considered by Ternois to be works done by Callot late in his life, at Nancy, perhaps as exercises with his pupils, such as Gaston, Duc d'Orléans, the brother of Louis XIII, who, when exiled to Nancy in 1629-30, came to study drawing with Callot.  Most of the drawings in the Chatsworth album were engraved after Callot's death by his followers.1
