Catalogue Note
Trometta's drawings show a consistent and marked personality, very influenced by Taddeo Zuccaro with whom in the past his work has often been confused. J.A. Gere was the first to clarify his style when he published many drawings for the decoration of the vault of the choir of S. Maria in Aracoeli, Rome, which is Trometta's most acclaimed work.1 The present lot is a typical work by the artist and probably dates from the same period as the Aracoeli frescoes, which were begun in 1566.
