Condition
This work has been well presented in an acid-free mount and behind museum quality glass. The paper has darkened somewhat, which has shifted the overall balance of the composition. Around the extreme edges of the sheet is a line, which demonstrates the extent of this staining. The paper has been laid down.

Catalogue Note
The present drawing was executed in either Gibraltar or Tangier and therefore is likely to date from May 1833, during Lewis's extended visit to Spain. Several other drawings of this lady survive. These include a study of her seated, facing forward (Sotheby's, London, 7 July 2011, lot 356), a study of her seated, shown in profile (Sotheby's, London, 25 November 2004, lot 221), and a third study of her standing in profile (Sotheby's, London, 4 July 2012, lot 203). Lewis included this sitter in a lithograph entitled A Jewish Woman of Gibraltar, in a Festa Dress. That image appeared as plate 17 in his 1836 book Sketches of Spain and Spanish Character.
