Catalogue Note
Jan Six, who is currently preparing a catalogue raisonné of the works of Arnold Boonen, has kindly informed us that this drawing is in fact a study by that artist for his 1714 group portrait of The Regents of the Spin- en Nieuwe Werkhuis, now in the Amsterdam Museum (inv. SA 7298). Only one other securely attributable drawing by Boonen is known, so this drawing will help provide a solid basis for further attributions to the artist. Although the disposition of the figures is the same in the painting as in the drawing, various details are different: after making the present, rapid sketch, Boonen decided to give two of the seated figures hats, to turn the standing figure on the right more towards the viewer, and to show the other standing figure with both arms down, rather than one raised, as in the drawing. From left to right, the sitters are: Andries Hees, Jacob Frederik du Fay, Andries Carel Jongh, Tobias Loten and Barent Mom.
