Catalogue Note
Although the motifs seen in this atmospheric drawing are familiar from a number of Teniers' paintings, only a small handful of still-life drawings like this are known. Two good examples are in Besançon and Stuttgart1, and another, also incorporating the fine cup seen in the present drawing, is in Hamburg.2 Indeed, that object must have been a Teniers studio prop, as it appears in a number of the artist's paintings; one of those, dated 1634 and now in Karlsruhe3, also has it, as here, near to a leaning lantern and various pots and jugs, although the overall composition is not so similar that this can be considered a direct preparatory study.
