The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The canvas has an old lining and an original stretcher which are both effective. The paint layer has been cleaned more recently and although the varnish is a little dull, the remainder of the work seems to be in lovely condition. Under ultraviolet light one can see that although the original paint layer reads quite strongly in the darkest colors in the boats and some of the figures, none of this appears to correspond to retouching. The painting appears to be undamaged and un-retouched.
