Condition

Oil on canvas, lined. The picture surface is flattened though the sitter's hair retains some texture. There is a fine web of craquelure across the picture surface; in the lower right hand quadrant, there are three small losses and a few areas that are beginning to flake. Under UV light, there is evidence of a few small scattered spots of inpaint around the sitter's head, though the majority of the work is hard to read.

Catalogue Note

Engraved:
Caroline Watson, 1804;
William Greatbach, 1817-1867.

Though Roberts (see W. Roberts, Sir William Beechey, R. A., London 1907) illustrates another, unfinished version of the present composition as a portrait of Lady Bernard (W. Younger Esq. collection), it has traditionally been identified as a portrait of Beechey's daughter, Charlotte Earle Beechey (1801-1878). She was the youngest daughter of the artist (and god-daughter of Queen Charlotte), and married Fletcher Norton, the Baron Grantley, in 1825.
