Description
- Marie-Victoire Lemoine
- Portrait of a young lady
- oil on canvas
Provenance
M. and Mme. Chaffoner, 1898 (from an old label on the reverse).
Condition
The canvas has been relined and the surface has been slightly pressed in some areas. Dirty and yellowed varnish. There is an area of paint loss and some lifting along lower edge. Some old discolored retouchings can be seen in this same area and some on her headdress. Other tiny losses can be seen above right eye and in background to right of her head; a few others scattered. Despite these, there is overall quite good retention of detail, especially in her face and hair and the overall image is very attractive. UV light shows an uneven varnish; retouching in areas as mentioned above; also some retouching to ruffle of her white shawl, at neckline and on headdress. Some small inpaints to craquelure on face and others scattered in the background.
Offered in an elaborately carved and gilt wood frame with a loss at the top.
