Condition

Oil on canvas, recently lined. Pigment separation and craquelure throughout. Frame abrasions at the edges. Under UV light, the varnish has been selectively cleaned and the architecture at left and figures at bottom are under a varnish that fluoresces green. There are older retouches that slightly fluoresce scattered throughout the sky and at the upper corners.

This painting repeats the composition of a painting by Claude now in the Musée des Vosges, Èpinal, which was commissioned by Cardinal Domenicho Cecchini (1589-1656) (see M. Röthlisberger, Claude Lorrain, The Paintings, London 1961, vol. 1, p. 297-99, reproduced vol. II, fig 208).
