Catalogue Note

Donated by TASCHEN.

No event has captured the imagination of humanity more powerfully than the Apollo 11 lunar landing, which was the subject of three articles for "Life" Magazine written by Norman Mailer. In 2010, Taschen published Mailer's book on the subject posthumously in the form of an oversized photo book, and commissioned Marc to create a limited-edition display case for the event. It turned out to be the perfect opportunity for Marc to combine two of his great passions: space exploration and the design possbilities of aluminium. The surface of the case, made from a single piece of aluminium, reproduces in three dimensions the topography of the Moon, while its legs are modelled on those of the Lunar Excursion Module, which made Neil Armstrong's giant leap for mankind possible. The spectacular case and book are enhanced by a slice of lunar meteorite, displayed in a unique red anodised aluminium presentation case. This rock specimen contains geochemical components that are a signature of lunar breccias, along with veins of impact melt - evidence of the lunar origin of this specimen as well as the astroidal impact mechanism responsible for launching this sample off the lunar surface. NWA 2995 is an extremely fresh meteorite - it is not weathered as a result of exposure to the Earth's elements. With classic off-white anorthostic inclusions, this is an exquisite complete slice of the Moon. MoonFire also comes with a Plexiglass-framed print signed by Armstrong's fellow astronaut and lunar explorer, Buzz Aldrin.
