Catalogue Note

Donated by George Cleverley & Co. Ltd.

Many of the objects selected for the (RED) Auction pay homage to design's symbiotic discipline - craft. The ultimate expression of fine craftsmanship married to function may well be a custom pair of leather shoes from George Cleverley & Co. Ltd., which has taken superb care of the feet of Winston Churchill, Clark Gable, Sir Elton John, Humphrey Bogart, Alexander McQueen, and Bryan Ferry, amongst many others. Part of the fun is in the fitting, which takes place in Cleverley's legendary London storefront in the 19th-century Royal Arcade off Old Bond Street, in the heart of London's West End.
