Catalogue Note

Second, much expanded edition and the first illustrated edition of Vasari's seminal artistic work, a collection of biographies of artists, sculptors and architects down to Vasari's own day (and including Vasari himself); the portraits were also issued separately without the text in the same year. This edition was much improved through the work of the experienced scholar and editor Vincenzo Borghini over the eighteen years between the first and second editions; he suggested corrections and changes of emphasis for Vasari's original text, so that more focus was given to the works of art and their settings rather than the biographical details of men of low social standing.
