Catalogue Note

Thomas Frognall Dibdin thought this edition far superior to the Zatta 1772 edition, in typography, illustration and layout; see lot 5 to compare the two editions.

The list of subscribers gives a fascinating insight into the late eighteenth-century characters interested in Italian literature, from William Hayley to William Hamilton, from Piranesi to Vanvitelli. The subscribers are divided by country so it is possible to identify Italians living in England, and the English in Italy. Molini was a Florentine bookselling firm with a branch in Paris so there is also a list of subscribers for France.
