Catalogue Note
Mitelli was an engraver, painter and sculptor who produced over 500 etchings of contemporary manners and morals: "his large print oeuvre, illustrating ceremonies and pageants, warfare, folklore, trades and religious paintings, provides a rich cultural source for contemporary Bolognese life" (Feinblatt, Grove Dictionary of Art).
His set of plates L'arti per via (1660) is one of his earliest suites, depicting Bolognese tradesmen and artisans which became the standard representations of the life of his home town. The creative compositions of Alfabeto in sogno (1683) became his best-known work of the time.
