Catalogue Note
Germain de Brie had studied under Janus Lascaris and Marcus Musurus; he became a friend of Erasmus after meeting him at Aldus's printing shop in 1508 and had a literary spat in print with Thomas More. This is one of several translations of Chrysostom undertaken by Germain and discussed in detail with Erasmus in their surviving correspondence. Joannes Oecolampadius had also been translating the works of Chrysostom at this time, and contributed some translations to Froben's edition of his works which Erasmus was coordinating.
