Catalogue Note

This delightful poem was written down by Goethe during a six-week stay in 1814 at Berka, a spa resort twelve miles south of Weimar (Goethe had himself been involved in the establishment of the spa facilities, which had opened only the previous year). The poem was subsequently set by many composers, including Zelter (1819), to whom it was sent on 22 April 1814, Medtner (Op. 15 no. 11, 1908), Wolf (Goethe Lieder, no.25, 1888), Schoeck (WoO 10, 1903) and Anton von Webern (Vier Lieder für Singstimme und Klavier, Op.12 no. 4, 1917).
