brown ink on paper (in three pieces), inscribed along lower left-hand edge, "CMv Weber", and signed on the lower right, "J Cawse del", with autograph inscription by Cawse on verso about the circumstances of the sketch, framed and glazed, (5.7 x 12cm), some browning, frame repaired with tape;--together with portraits of Wagner (after a photograph by Joseph Albert), framed, oil on canvas, overall size (39 x 32.5cms), and of Hugo Wolf (an ink-wash painting by ClĂ©mentine von Wagner), framed and glazed, overall size (26 x 35.5cms), some cracking to the frame of Wagner's portrait (3)

Catalogue Note

Weber died in London in 1826, in the house of Sir George Smart, not long after the première of his opera Oberon. Cawse's ink portrait gives every indication of having been done at the time,  and is an important record of Weber's demise.
