Catalogue Note

Rare: Apart from the present exemplar, we have no record of any editions by Verdelot appearing in these rooms, the only exceptions being a single bassus part in 1976 and some altus parts from disparate editions in 1949 (in the Landau sale).  Verdelot was the first important madrigalist, his earliest works appearing at the dawn of madrigal publication in the 1530s.  The present collection includes a dozen six-part madrigals by Verdelot (and others attributed to him) together with works by Arcadelt, Costanzo Festa, Gombert, and Willaert.  The notation contains old-style ligatures, later rarely encountered in popular secular pieces of this type.  Please also see lot 183.
