Catalogue Note
Leonardo Marini (c.1735-1806) was a leading Italian costume designer at the Teatro Regio in Turin (active 1767-1799). He was notable for raising costume design on a par with stage design. The present apparently contemporary designs relate to stagings of the following Metastasian (or "post-Metastasian") operas: Attilio Regolo (Regolo, Publio and Amilcare), Semiramide riconosciuta (Semiramide and Scitalce), Gli Orazi or Muzio Scevola (Orazio, Porsenna), Idomeneo (Idamante, Cretesi) and others. The composers and the precise operatic settings cannot be easily identified as Metastasio's librettos were set many times throughout the eighteenth centuries.
