Catalogue Note
First edition of Pushkin's narrative poem about Ivan Mazepa, a Ukrainian Cossack who fought in the Battle of Poltava, which formed the basis for Tchaikovsky's opera Mazepa. Pushkin's inspiration partly came from Byron's romantic treatment of the same subject in 1819.
