Catalogue Note

The magnificent dedication copy, bound for Tsar Alexander I and from the library at Tsarskoe Selo.

Noverre's seminal work on modern ballet was first published in 1760 in Stuttgart, where he had founded the Stuttgart Ballet for the court of the Duke of Württemberg. This edition includes, for the first time, the libretti of twenty-two ballets by Noverre. Charles le Picq, a pupil of Noverre in Stuttgart, became principal choreographer at the court in St Petersburg and used his influence with the Tsar to have this edition published on Noverre's behalf.
