Catalogue Note

A finely-produced pack that integrates the card symbols neatly into the whole image, in a similar fashion to Cotta's Transformation packs (see lots 116-118).

According to C.P. Hargrave, "the cards originally appeared, a few at a time, in the 'Repository of Arts' for 1818-19" (A History of Playing Cards, p. 146). This is one of several sets designed by H.F. Müller. "Beatrice, or Disappointment in Love" is a Viennese tale.
