Catalogue Note
The French Revolution released card makers from strict regulation, and there followed a flood of non-standard cards, in which the court cards were replaced by republican virtues; here we see Liberté de la presse, Génie de la paix, Égalité de rangs and even Égalité de couleur. The aces are surrounded by a frame of republican fasces.
The set is complete with 32 cards, containing aces, all court cards, and numbers 7-10 only, which indicates it was designed for playing piquet.
