Catalogue Note

Wagner was based in Vienna at this time, hoping to organise the premiere of Tristan. Weimar was also a city where Liszt had performed Wagner’s works, notably the first performance of Lohengrin in 1851 and was clearly marked out for the possible premiere of Wagner’s most recent composition. But it was not to be: Tristan was not premiered until 1865 in Munich.
