Catalogue Note

In February 1871 in Florence, Verdi presided over a commission for the reform of Italian music conservatories and in March he drafted a document (“papyrus”) about it.  The previous year he had declined Francesco Florimo's invitation to become the head of the Naples Conservatory.   Paolo Serrao (1830-1907) was Professor of Composition at Naples, where he taught composers such as Martucci and Cilea.  Verdi selected Serrao to represent Naples on the commission (see F. Abbiati, Verdi (1959), III, 444).
