Description

  • Paganini, Niccolò
  • Contemporary pencil sketches of Paganini's head
  • Annoté  en haut à gauche Braham (?) et en haut à droite Paganini
  • pencil on paper
  • 21 x 15,5 cm ; 8 1/4 by 6 in
two working sketches of Paganini's head, apparently drawn from life, together with a pianist (possibly Sivori) and a violinist (possibly Belloni), executed in lead pencil on paper (21 x 15.5cm), French school, probably 1830s, fold-marks and browning to paper

Provenance

From the collection of André Meyer (1884-1974).

Literature

F. Lesure, Collection musicale André Meyer, Abbeville, 1961, p.105 and reproduced pl.194

Condition

This pencil drawing is in a fine old wooden frame. There has been some creasing and splitting along folds in the paper which very slightly affects the two images of Paganini’s head. Whereas the sketches of Paganini’s head appear spontaneous, those of the pianist and violinist standing behind the pianist are finely executed and appear finished

Catalogue Note

These sketches of Paganini's head give the very appearance of having been done from life, possibly as the great violinist was performing.
