Catalogue Note

Autograph manuscripts by Korngold are of considerable rarity at auction, particularly works dating from this period of his early fame, when his talent was lauded by composers like Puccini and Strauss.   We have traced only one record of a complete work by Korngold at auction in the last thirty years: a sacred choral work dating from his exile in America in 1941.  This fluent manuscript of Korngold's Quartet testifies to his precocious talent, first noted by Mahler in 1907.

It is a very early sketch of a complete movement by Korngold, dated Christmas 1922, from the String Quartet No.1, first performed and published in 1924.  The quartet was hitherto believed to date from 1923, but the dated inscription shows that this third movement at least was composed earlier.  The composer appears to have already had the piece in his mind largely complete (albeit with occasional gaps in the texture), before setting it down on paper.  Although this must be an early draft (with the bifolia used sequentially), there are very few alterations or revisions in the manuscript and many of the articulation and dynamic markings are already present.
