Catalogue Note

The American Library is a remarkable foundation, based, when it originally opened in 1920, on books sent  to U.S. soldiers in France. The library remained open throughout the Second World War , due to the dedication of its staff and the protection of the Chief Librarian in Berlin, Dr Hermann Fuchs. Gershwin's An American in Paris dates from 1928, the year Gershwin spent three months in the city meeting Ravel, Poulenc, Prokofiev, Milhaud, Walton and Berg.
