Catalogue Note
Pauline Viardot was one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of her time and a muse to many great nineteenth-century composers, including Chopin, Berlioz, Wagner and Liszt. Though Berlioz initially dismissed her as a ‘diva manquée’, his admiration for her grew after hearing her in Meyerbeer’s Le Prophète in the role of Fidès. It is however for her role as Orpheus in Berlioz’s revised 1859 edition of Gluck’s opera Orpheo ed Euridice - rehearsals for which are mentioned in this letter - that she is best remembered now.
