Catalogue Note

The Op.5 church sonatas, published first in Bologna in 1683, are notable for their polyphonic textures and their preference for long unfolding lines, in contrast to Corelli's shorter balanced phrases. A remarkable feature of these parts is the contemporary or near-contemporary manuscript annotation at the end of the violino primo part by an English copyist (other entries may also be in the same hand) - a witness to the interest aroused by Bassani's music outside his native Italy.
