Catalogue Note

This is a working score of Antony and Cleopatra, containing revisions, additions and alterations, with differences from the final version of Barber's most ambitious score.  The opera was commissioned for the opening of the new Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center, New York, where it was staged on 16 September 1966, with Leontyne Price and Justino Diaz in the leading roles.  It was not a success, and Barber revised the opera with Gian Carlo Menotti for performances at the Juilliard School in 1975.
