  • Three autograph music manuscripts, comprising Barber's transcriptions of music by Debussy, J.S. Bach and Erik Satie

the transcriptions for flute, notated on up to eleven staves per page in black ink or pencil, annotated by Barber with metrical markings and phrasing, including

1) "Syrinx" by Debussy, notated in pencil in C-sharp major (instead of D-flat major), but without key-signature, thus with all the accidentals marked individually with sharp signs, beginning on A-sharp and ending on C-sharp, with the autograph note "Every note without an accidental is [a natural]", 2 pages, on separate leaves, folio



2) Bach's Chorale prelude "Nun komm' der Heiden Heiland", BWV 659, the top right-hand decorated melody for the keyboard, notated [for flute] in black ink on eleven staves, with a number of passages of counterpoint deleted on the verso, 2 pages, folio 



3) "Gymnopédie no.3", by Satie, notated in pencil on five staves per page, the chordal accompaniment only added at the beginning and end as cues, 2 pages, folio, with the title on the verso in orange crayon



6 pages, folio, 12-stave paper (Passantino Brands no.1), no place or date, probably early 1960s

Catalogue Note

These transcriptions of these famous melodies were made for the artist Manfred Ibel, who also played the flute, during the early 1960s. Ibel was Barber's lover and muse at the time.
