Catalogue Note

A rare early German treatise on steel and iron, revealing the secrets of the smiths. It contains the earliest printed recipes for the hardening of steel and the etching and colouring of metal(in order to decorate swords and armour).

This is one of several editions printed in 1532. The Nuremberg version, thought to be the earliest, survives in a single copy in Wolfenbüttel. It was a popular work, becoming associated (and printed) with other tracts on dyeing and artist's paints.
