Description

  • Collection of hand-prints of about ninety celebrated scientists in physics, geology, chemistry, medicine and aviation, most signed, made by Marianne Raschig in Berlin in the 1920s

1) science: Max Planck (both hands signed, and a photographic negative print), Wilhelm Ostwald (both hands signed), the sound-archivist Wilhelm Doegen, the polar explorer Wilhelm Filchner, Wilhelm Krüger, Alfons Goldschmidt, Fanny Moser, Alfred Adam, Theodor Echtermeyer, the eugenicists Hermann Muckermann, Eugen Fischer, Peryt Shou and Hans Friedenthal, Gotthold Weil, Roda Wieser and Marianne Raschig herself; together with, in



2) Medicine: Magnus Hirschfeld (both hands signed, and a photographic negative print), Hermine Heusler-Edenhuizen, Max Hirsch, Siegfried Loewenthal, Prof. Janos Plesch, Ernst Bastanier, Konrad Grams, Adolf Heilborn and many other doctors



3) physcists, flight engineers and pilots: Georg von Arco, Hugo Eckener, James Fitzmaurice, Ehrenfried von Hünefeld, Hermann Köhl, Erhard Milch, August von Parseval, Thea Rasch, Johann Schütte, Ernst Udet and others

Catalogue Note

The photographic negative of Max Planck's hand was included in Raschig's book Hand- und Persönlichkeit, Einführung in das System der Handlehre (1931), plate 136.  Magnus Hirschfeld was one of the first doctors to champion the rights of homosexuals: the Nazis attacked Hirschfeld's Institut für Sexualwissenschaft in 1933 and burned many of its books. Wilhelm Ostwald received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1909.   Wilhelm Doegen was a pioneer in the science of speech-recording and founded a Tonbildmuseum in Berlin.  Please see also Lots 325 and 348.
