Catalogue Note

The Compendio is an abbreviated version of Jerónimo de Carranza's De la philosophia de las armas, the innovative and influential fencing manual first published in 1582. While Pachecho de Narvaez's text remains faithful to Carranza's philosophy and teaching methods, it is markedly more concise than the 1582 work: in his letter to the reader he explains that he has trimmed his mentor's digressions in order to distill his ideas and make them more easily comprehensible.
