Catalogue Note
Marguerite de Valois (1553-1615) was the first wife of Henry IV of France, popularly known as "la reine Margot" (as in the novel by Dumas and films based on it). Henry did not ascend to the throne of France until 1589; so at this time Marguerite is styled as "par la Grace de dieu Royne de Navarre Soeur unique de Roy Duchesse de Vallois & Astampes..." etc.
