Catalogue Note

Originally published in Lyon in c. 1511, in six parts (the section "La legende des Venitiens" is not here present), these works by Le Maire were printed in numerous editions in the 1510s and 1520s and are often found bound together. The woodcuts include a portrait of Anne of Brittany because Le Maire became historiographer to the queen in 1512.

Le Maire (1473-1548) was from Bavay in Hainault, and Les illustrations de Gaule refers to Belgian Gaul, whose foundation he ascribes to Bavo, king of Bithynia at the time of the Trojan War.
