Catalogue Note
First edition of Jacob Beringer's version of the New Testament in German, designed for use by Catholics despite being based on Luther's 1522 translation. It was reissued in 1529 and 1532, also by Grüninger at Beringer's expense.
This is the only recorded use of these woodcuts. Vogtherr (1490-1556) is thought to have trained in the workshop of Hans Burgkmair and also possibly with Hans Schaüfelein. He is known as the author of the first printed model-book for artists (Kunstbüchlein, published 1537).
