Catalogue Note

Fourth edition of the first printed book on agriculture.

Written in the 13th century and first printed in 1471, the Ruralia commoda was a popular work: by 1500 there had been six editions in Latin, two in French, two in German and three in Italian. Crescenzi owned an estate at the Villa d'Olmo near Bologna, and his descriptions of  husbandry and agricultural practices seem to draw on his personal experience of farming and managing his land. The book includes sections on hunting and fishing, wine-making, arboriculture and horticulture and the medicinal uses of plants.
