Catalogue Note
Editio princeps. Asconius Pedianus's first-century commentary on five of Cicero's orations had been rediscovered at St Gall by Poggio Bracciolini during the Council of Constance in 1416. The editor, Squarzafico, writes in the dedication that he produced this edition "pro utilitate publico", for the benefit of the public; along with Asconius's work he includes George of Trebizond's commentary on Cicero's speech Pro Ligario (1440), Antonio Loschi's examination of eleven speeches of Cicero (c. 1392), and his contemporary Sicco Polenton's argumenta on twelve of them.
