3 parts in one volume, 4to (261 x 178mm.), title engraved within architectural border with portrait of of Ariosto and Franceschi's device, engraved title-pages to other parts, full-page engraving (one repeated) and engraved cartouche at the start of each canto, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, late eighteenth-century blue morocco gilt, edges gilt, lacking a8 (the repeated engraving at the start of Canto 34), title-page slightly browned, small hole in F5 (illustration to Canto 10), occasional spotting elsewhere, lower cover slightly rubbed, joints slighly cracked at head and foot

Catalogue Note

"The most elaborate of the sixteenth-century editions" (Mortimer). The original engraving for Canto 34 depicted the figure of St John the Evangelist; this was suppressed and a repeat of the engraving for Canto 33 was supplied in its place (lacking in this copy).
