Sale, Christie's London, 11th November 1988, lot 367, where acquired by the present owner
Condition
Original canvas.
There are scattered areas of craquelure to the canvas, particularly to the dark blue pigment in the upper half of the work. There are a couple of minor frame abrasions along the extreme right hand edge, and a few very minor scattered traces of light loss to the extreme top and bottom edges, most probably in line with a previous framing and only visible upon very close inspection. This excepting the work appears in very good overall condition.
Ultraviolet light reveals scattered traces of fluorescence and retouchings to the work.
Housed in an ornate wooden and gilt frame.

Catalogue Note
'I did not paint much from nature then, but hung round the Gare St. Lazare, the Gare du Nord, the Seine, and the outskirts of Paris, working on quick sketches and inventing a new formula for myself' (C.R.W. Nevinson, Paint & Prejudice, Methuen Publishers, London, 1937, p44).
