Sound board, there is a visible, consistent grain. There are minor signs of slight abrasion and possible in-filling to the extreme edges, only partially visible in the present frame. There is minor surface dirt, with slight flattening to one or two of the raised areas of impasto, and isolated spots of fine reticulation. There are some minor pressure marks and possible light scratches to the board, including to the bottom centre and around the signature in the bottom right corner, which itself has one or two small traces of loss, with a further minor fleck of loss to the curving black form in the upper right quadrant. There is a further scratch to the top of the red form in the left hand side of the composition. Ultraviolet light reveals some scattered spots of fluorescence and probable retochings, in a small spot in the bottom right hand quadrant, and to the centre of the extreme right hand edge, as well as elsewhere to the work.
