Catalogue Note

Narayan Shridhar Bendre was particularly inspired by rural life and throughout his career his works reflect a sensitive and romantic understanding of humanity. Bendre began his artistic career in his hometown at the State School of Art, Indore, where the emphasis was on landscape painting, and he then worked at Rabindranath Tagore’s art school Santiniketan alongside Ramkinker Baij and others in the years surrounding India’s independence. As he became more involved in the contemporary art scene in Mumbai, he translated his academic training into expressive and modernist compositions. The present large work bears evidence of his early interest in pointillism, seen in the woman’s clothes, and in a fauve treatment of color.
