Catalogue Note
Avinash Chandra, known for his abstracted yet sexualized representations of the female body and lyrical abstraction, began his career painting Indian landscapes and townscapes. Though he moved permanently from New Delhi to London in 1956, he continued to develop works around the theme of landscape for another decade. The present work explores an urban British landscape, as seen by the church architecture in the background. It is unusual for its more modeled approach and nearly monochromatic and moody palette.
